I believe good counseling/psychotherapy is an art, based on scientific principles. I further believe the art comes in the way I listen to what you do and do not say, as well as from my observations and interpretations of your body language (including interactions between couples and among families). My strong intuitive abilities set me apart from those who look just with their eyes and not with their intuition and heart.

Two facts about your treatment are essential to understand.

  • First, your issue did not develop overnight. Though we will resolve it as quickly as possible, the resolution will not happen immediately.  The methods I use do have a track record as being significantly faster than many common and long-standing psychotherapeutic approaches.

  • Second, I work with you to find the answers. I don’t tell you what the problem is, what to do about it and leave you out of the solution process.  My role is to guide you toward discovering – for yourself – the source of the problem and its various potential solutions.  You will never forget that “aha!” moment when you finally recognize your own truth.

Psychotherapy is a process of self-discovery that can enrich your life by bringing you more mental clarity and a richer emotional experience. I use an eclectic approach to therapy, geared towards the needs of each individual. It incorporates a psychodynamic process including cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapies and mindfulness. And unless you are diagnosed with specific mental illnesses, then you should not be in therapy for the rest of your life.

  • Cognitive therapy explores the assumptions and beliefs that shape the way we feel about our lives. This therapy helps to reduce stress by exploring the ways in which certain beliefs contribute to anxiety and depression.
  • Interpersonal therapies explore how we connect with other people. By learning how we interact with others, this type of therapy helps us overcome our limitations to develop successful relationships in all areas of our lives.
  • Mindfulness helps to integrate our body, mind and emotions by bringing a focused awareness to each. The goal of this therapy is to develop a richer appreciation of life.

For the vast majority of individuals, therapy is a process of self-learning with a beginning and an end.  The point is not to make you become dependent on me to solve your problems, but for me to give you the tools to ultimately become able to deal positively with your problems yourself.

My goal is to help you identify the problem you’re having, define it, discover its causes and develop a strategy to resolve it. I will choose a method of working with you that seems both suited to your personality and to the issue(s). We then work to get the problem(s) under control, and I gradually teach you ways to recognize “trigger” situations and what to do when you encounter them.

I want to help you be aware of everything going on around you right now.  You will never get back any time you spend dwelling on the past. Any time you spend daydreaming about future possibilities—without taking steps toward making them happen—is also wasted time. I can teach you how to shift your thinking to focus on attainable goals.

After you’ve “graduated” from regular therapy sessions, I am always available for phone or office follow-ups.  One of my goals is to do my best, over time, to give you the tools to cope with life’s challenges - yourself.
